Fall in pupils taking languages expected

Its a sad fact the number of pupils who are not taking up a modern language. There are so many advantages to developing a bi-lingual tongue. For instance learning a second language can be culturally rewarding. If you like to travel, knowing at least a few words of the language of the country you going to visit is going to help tremendously when it comes to getting what you want, and starting or engaging in a conversation with someone in a language that is not your native tongue can be very good for your confidence...

In todays world a good education is essential and language learning has some many depths of choice and can add so much quality to your character as well as your bank balance. Learning a second learning encourages excellence in pupils in other areas of education that can only be enhanced. Providing the quality of teaching and the variety of methods used can engage and stimulate the pupils interest...and I fear that this is not the case when it come to our schools..

Pupils taking GCSEs in modern languages are likely to show a further drop in numbers when results come out on Thursday, the head of the UK's largest exams board said today.

While it is expected that the results will show a similar rise in overall grades as last week's A-levels, Mike Cresswell, head of the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance, predicted figures would show the lowest number of 16-year-olds taking French and German in a decade.

Candidates for foreign language GCSEs have dropped since French, German and Spanish became an optional part of the curriculum in 2004.

French parliament to debate new immigration law

This bill of law being proposed by the French government I believe essential if that country is to keep its unique identity and way of life.

For immigration problems you don't have to go to far and see the way it is becoming for its virtual neighbor Britain...which is becoming a disaster area...no not because of immigrants coming to this country - Britain relies on immigration having done so for many, many generations.

But there is much much disgruntlement between the native Britons and the influx of immigrants pouring into the country...who are seen as taking all the jobs, anti-social - keeping themselves to themselves, showing no interest in integrating themselves in the British way of life.

And this is causing calamity,

Are the French Government doing something sensible in making immigrants learn the French language for 2 whole months? Perhaps?
But it does show the French are wanting to preserve their unique way of living and project their social integration.

Paris, Aug. 23 (Xinhua): French government announced on Tuesday that a bill of law, which is aimed at bringing immigration under control, will be presented to an extraordinary session of parliament in September 2007.

The law, which was presented to the council of ministers on July 4, notably seeks to change the conditions required for reunification of families, which will now be based on several criteria including "respecting the values of the republic and mastery of the French language."

If the law is enacted, foreigners wishing to join their families in France will be required to learn French for a maximum period of two months prior to their arrival.

In addition, those wishing to bring their relatives to France will be required to demonstrate that they are financially capable of meeting the needs of the size of their families.

In a further move, the law stipulates that successful applicants for family reunification will be required to enter into an agreement with the state on the "reception and integration of the family," which means that they will accept to be trained on the rights and duties of parents in France.
